Historic District Design Guidelines

Gossman Group enjoys working in historic, main street communities and is often asked to either update or develop new design guidelines for both historic districts and design districts. In particular Gossman Group’s design guidelines pay close attention to the issues of context and design compatibility. In preparing design guidelines, Gossman Group leads the community through a visioning process that starts with an understanding of different strategies for new construction in historic settings such as replication or literal interpretation, invention within a specific architectural style, and abstract or intentional opposition. Once a community understands the options presented by new construction, design guidelines can be crafted around a specific vision that the community has for the growth and development of their historic or design district. Gossman Group’s most recent design guidelines are an update of Tiffin’s Downtown Design Guidelines and new guidelines for Loveland’s recently adopted historic district.
